Keep Your Skin Healthy

The skin is the largest organ of the body. Our skin protects us everyday by blocking harmful microbes and elements that may damage our bodies. The skin also regulates our body’s temperature and allows us to feel various sensations such as touch, heat and cold. The skin has three layers namely the epidermis, which is the outermost layer and is the layer that creates our skin tone. The next layer is the dermis that contains connective tissues, hair follicles and sweat glands and last but not the least is the deepest layer, the hypodermis. The hypodermis is made our of fat and tissues. If you are wondering what creates our skin color, it is due to the special cells called the melanocytes that produce the pigment, melanin.

Now that you read about what the skin is, it is important to remember that taking care of our skin is very essential not only to look good but also to feel good.

Below are some tips on how we can keep our skin completely healthy.

  • Drink lots of water. It is essential to keep our skin hydrated. Dehydrated skin will make it looked older than it actually is. Drinking tea that is not caffeinated and fresh fruit and vegetable juices also helps.
  • Protect your skin daily from the sun. Use sunblock or sunscreen. Prolonged sun exposure without protection can increase your chances of getting wrinkles, age spots and up the chances of you having a more serious illness called cancer.
  • Consume foods with antioxidants such as berries, spinach, nuts, seeds and dark chocolate. These type of foods can help our bodies fight diseases at the same time reduces the aging process that can be beneficial to our skin.
  • Taking long baths especially hot ones are not good for our skin because it removes the natural oils from our body that can also dry out our skin. Also, strong and harsh soaps should be avoided.
  • If shaving, use extra precaution by using shaving creams, gel or lotion.
  • Always remember to moisturize or use your preferred lotion.
  • If you are wearing makeup, never leave your makeup on overnight.
  • As much as possible do not touch your face that much. Your hands can be carriers of bacteria that when transferred to our faces can clog up our pores and cause unnecessary breakouts. Always clean your hands.
  • Change your pillowcases, bed sheets and blanket regularly.
  • Limit the consumption of alcoholic beverages and caffeinated drinks.
  • Get the right amount of sleep. Our skin also needs to repair itself, which is mostly done while we are sleeping.
  • Keep on moving. Exercise regularly. Exercising increases the circulation of oxygen and nutrients. Also, when we exercise we sweat a lot with that our skin releases toxins that results in a clearer, healthier and subtle skin.

The skin is what covers our entire body, caring for it is as much as important as any part. Don’t take it for granted, make that effort and keep it healthy.
